The Eternals were engineered from early humans to be long-lived and nearly indestructible, tasked with protecting Earth from the Deviants, their monstrous counterparts. Ajak himself is an Eternal of great power, known for his exceptional strength, intelligence, and ability to communicate with the Celestials. Ajak was born over a million years ago in what is now modern-day Siberia. He, along with the other Eternals, lived in the ancient city of Polaria. Throughout the centuries, Ajak adopted various roles and identities, often being revered as a god by human civilizations. He was known as Tecumotzin to the Aztecs and Quetzalcoatl to the Incas, where he played significant roles in their respective mythologies. Ajak's most notable ability is his unique connection with the Celestials. He serves as a communicator and interpreter for these god-like beings, who periodically visit Earth to judge the progress of their creations. This role gives Ajak a position of great importance and responsibility among the Eternals. His communication with the Celestials is crucial, especially during their periodic visits known as the Hosts. In the original 1976 series, Ajak is reawakened by the archaeologist Dr. Daniel Damian, who inadvertently stumbles upon the Eternal's chamber in Peru. Ajak, upon awakening, resumes his duty of preparing for the arrival of the Celestials' Fourth Host. He acts as a guide and intermediary, helping to facilitate the interactions between the Celestials and the human race. Ajak's knowledge and wisdom prove invaluable as the Eternals, alongside their human and Deviant counterparts, navigate the trials brought about by the Celestials' judgment. During the 1985 series, Ajak's storyline delves deeper into his character and his relationship with the other Eternals. He is shown to be a fierce warrior, often engaging in battles to protect humanity and uphold the Eternals' mission. Despite his formidable abilities, Ajak is also depicted as a compassionate and thoughtful being, often reflecting on the broader implications of the Celestials' plans for Earth. In "Eternals: The Herod Factor," Ajak continues his role as a guardian and mediator. The story explores his interactions with both his fellow Eternals and the human characters, emphasizing his deep sense of duty and loyalty. The 2006 revival of the Eternals brought Ajak into modern times, reimagining his character for a new audience. In this series, Ajak's memory, along with those of other Eternals, has been wiped by Sprite, an Eternal with reality-altering powers. As Ajak gradually regains his memories and abilities, he must confront the challenges of his forgotten past and the evolving world around him. This series highlights Ajak's resilience and adaptability, showcasing his enduring commitment to the Eternals' mission. In the 2019 "Eternals" series, Ajak once again plays a pivotal role.
